Eighth killed in fire this winter

A MAN who died in a house fire at Punchbowl last Saturday night was the eighth death due to residential fires in NSW this winter.

The fire broke out on the top floor of the two-storey townhouse in Highclere Avenue around 10pm, with three people who were eating a meal downstairs escaping when thick smoke began billowing through the home.
However, a 54-year-old, who was one of the trio, grabbed a fire extinguisher and rushed upstairs to douse the flames, before being overcome by smoke.
Despite the efforts of firefighters who carried the unconscious man from the building and then joined paramedics performing CPR, they were unable to revive him.
Fire investigators returned to the home on Monday to further examine the scene to determine the cause.
While a number of damaged Lithium-Ion batteries were found in the ruins of the townhouse, fire investigators will seek to determine whether they were responsible for the blaze.
The upper level of the home was destroyed.
Police are urging anyone with CCTV footage or information about the incident to contact Bankstown police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
