Eagles fly high till rain washes out win hopes

HEAVY rainfall robbed the Auburn Eagles of victory in the second round of the Sydney Shires first grade cricket competition.

With a number of new faces in the side, the Eagles got off to a great start in the two day game, winning the toss and sending the Hurricanes into bat. They had immediate results with a fantastic fielding effort from local junior, Saud Rana, who, making his First Grade debut for the Eagles, fielded the first ball of the innings and ran out the opening batsman for the Hurricanes with a direct hit.
The Hurricanes were eventually bowled out for a modest 118, with the standout bowlers for the Eagles being captain Yasir Ali taking 4-31, which included the prize wicket of the Eagles former Captain Corey Lowe, and Mark Bursa with 4-34.
Going in to bat in the pursuit of the Hurricanes’ 118, the Eagles lost an early wicket before newcomer, Peter Andonopoulos 25 (not out) and Asad Usman 36 (not out) batted strongly to have the Eagles in a commanding position on 2-86 at the end of day one and in a sound position to push for victory on day two – that was until the match was abandoned due to the rain.
The firsts narrowly lost their first round match to Burwood Briars.
All lower grade second round matches were also abandoned due to rain.
