Drivers reminded to slow down, take extra care with school back

CUMBERLAND Highway Patrol are reminding drivers to slow down and take extra care with students returning to school.

Sergeant Scott Allerton says while a large proportion of students have been absent from schools during the height of the Covid pandemic due to home learning, this year would once again see student numbers return to normal schooling resulting in heightened pedestrian traffic across all school zones.
“We need all motorists to remain vigilant as schools return to normal operations,” he said.
“Drivers need to slow down, stick to the reduced speed limit and keep an eye out for children.
“Pay attention to the flashing school warning lights, obey the road rules by parking legally and follow the directions of School Crossing Supervisors who are working diligently protecting all children.”
School zones are active from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm. Fines are also higher for mobile phone use and parking in school zones.
