Driver hospitalised under guard after hitting police cars in chase

TWO police vehicles were damaged during an alleged pursuit which began in Belmore and came to a crashing end in Riverwood on Sunday night.

The pursuit, which began about 10pm, when a Toyota Hilux utility failed to pull over on Albert Street, Belmore, before it proceeded through a red traffic light at the intersection of Burwood Road, was terminated due to safety concerns.
Shortly after, police received information the utility was travelling on Stacey Street, Bankstown, after it hit a number of vehicles and a pole.
A second pursuit was initiated on Fairford Road and onto the M5, where at the Belmore Road off ramp at Riverwood, the utility hit a police vehicle, before rolling into a second police vehicle.
The driver, a 39-year-old man, was removed from the vehicle and taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition, where he was under police guard.
