Dozens of new friends a perk when you join club for retirees

ONE group of retired and semi-retired people, members of Padstow Combined Probus Club, aren’t just satisfied with local outings but instead have ventured to exotic destinations such as South Africa, Egypt, China and even the Greek Islands.

They are also lively theatre goers, with South Pacific, Tina Turner, Wicked and Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat on their hit list for April and May.
This week saw them on a Mudgee winery tour and they also love their sports, dabbling in barefoot and lawn bowls, croquet, table tennis and the trots.
Secretary Val Isaacs says any trips out of Sydney are a popular break from the rat race.
“I’m always happy to jump on a bus and they can take me anywhere, it’s always somewhere special,” she said with a laugh.
Meeting on the first Friday of the month at Padstow RSL from 11am and second Friday of the morning for a guided tour, they also catch up monthly to visit different restaurants to experience multicultural cuisine.
Established in 2004, the club had about 142 members before covid and were down to 109 last year, with about 93 now registered.
“You don’t have to come to every event or meeting but it’s a great opportunity to stay connected in the community and you always have something to look forward to,” Val said.
Even their guest speakers are fascinating.
“We always have an Anzac Day meeting featuring retired members of the armed forces,” she said.
“Another speaker came to demonstrate his drones, now that was a sight in Padstow RSL auditorium, it was amazing.”
When you retire those friendships that are developed through your working life are often lost.
“The day you join Probus, you’ll instantly have dozens of new friends,” she said.
