On a mission to get ‘street’ cats under control, Kimberley Hews estimates she has helped up to 20 cats get desexed thanks to ‘rescue’ vets but needs more support to pay for the surgeries as well as to provide food for those that are starving.
Starting out as a volunteer with rescue organisations, she says most groups are burnt out after being inundated with requests to home or provide medical care to the thousands of homeless animals roaming Sydney suburbs.
“We are looking for kind, compassionate people who really care for animals and don’t mind donating some of their time,” she said.
She is also inviting residents to donate plants and vegan cakes to a Plant & Bake Sale fundraiser at Vegan Grocery Store in Glebe on Saturday, July 2.
“Of course, everyone is welcome to support our fundraiser through buying any of the sale goodies on the day and for those that are keen to donate a plant or bake, we can arrange collection,” she said.
“We are only a handful of volunteers but are starting to make a difference.
“We just need a bit of support so that we can make life better for these poor animals as well as the community.”

CATS are capable of producing on average 4.2 kittens a litter and 2.1 litters a year and what may have started as only a couple of cats a few years ago, has now become a ‘colony’ numbering about 40 on the streets of Lidcombe.
