Diver aged 66 scores silver medal in Japan

IT was shovels and garden forks down for a round of applause last week when Canterbury City Community Centre (4cs) volunteers discovered they had a world medal-winning diver among their garden care team.

Katy Rosenthall, 66, was awarded two silver medals in the Women Springboard Diving event at the World Masters Aquatics Championship in Japan last month.
Thrilled with her achievement, the last time Katy competed at a World Championship was in Korea in 2019 where she came fifth and sixth in the 1m and 3m springboard dives.
“I was only hoping to do a little better this time and maybe get a fourth and a fifth so to medal in both events was fantastic and I only narrowly missed out on the gold,” she said.
A national champion in New Zealand as a child, Katy thought her diving days were over when she moved to Australia in 1974.
She worked as a book-keeper and motivational speaker before raising a family and retiring about 10 years ago.
“I joined the Diving Masters group at Sydney Olympic Park for something to do, training there once a week; I entered my first World Master Games in 2009 and won a bronze and silver so just kept it up,” she said.
When she retired, she heard that 4cs needed garden care volunteers and was happy to help.
“It’s only one day a week but I really enjoy being outside assisting the elderly in the sunshine and the supervisors are wonderful,” she said.
“If you have a few hours’ spare a week, you shouldn’t definitely give it a go.”
