Desperate for helpers

THEY’VE been a vital support to the community for over five decades but Holroyd Community Aid (HCA) may soon have to close its doors permanently over a lack of volunteers.

Shut throughout Covid and the lockdown for the first time since its founding in 1966, HCA re-opened last month and offers welfare services on Thursdays and Fridays, with the Op Shop open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
A volunteer since 2000, HCA coordinator Selina Chen says they offer emergency relief for prescriptions, gas and electricity, as well as Telstra and food vouchers for families in need.
The Op Shop features quality, pre-loved affordable children’s and adults clothing plus household bric-a-brac, with children’s clothing just $2 a piece for this week only.
Ms Chen says they urgently need reliable, local volunteers.
“Our volunteers need to be multi-taskers and motivated,” she said.
“They need to have a good work ethic and the most important thing is for them to have a passion to offer their time and energy to serve the community.”
Located at 17a Miller Street in Merrylands, the HCA Opportunity Shop is open from 10am-2.30pm, and bookings are essential if seeking welfare support.
