Day to celebrate family business

WHEN Principal lawyer at CM Lawyers in Marrickville, Christine Manolakos, welcomed husband Alex Sapounas as Head Conveyancer to the business in 2003, she wasn’t sure how it would work out but the couple have never looked back.

With National Family Business Day last week (September 19) encouraging residents to shop local, Christine said working with family meant that someone always had your back.
“I’m sure that working with extended members of the family would have a different set of challenges but it’s easier for a married couple because they are already partners in life,” she said.
“We have common goals and interests but we do tend to talk shop a bit at home and have had to learn to draw a line.”
The couple have a son, Stanley, who is 15.
“At this stage, he has expressed a desire to become a legal eagle too having heard so many of our conversations growing up but we’ll have to wait and see,” Christine added.
The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell says family businesses are the lifeblood of our communities and key contributors to the local economy.
“National Family Business Day is a time to recognise the significant role these businesses play, accounting for up to 70 per cent of Australian businesses and employing around half of the country’s workforce,” she said.
“I urge people to show support for the family business in your community and buy local.”
