Dads back in classroom for paper planes, pizza

A GROUP of adventurous fathers had fun with their children last Thursday when Padstow Park Primary School’s ‘Dads Group’ got together for a Paper Planes and Pizza night.

On offer each term and coordinated by teacher Trevor Barlow, the dads and children have also enjoyed Survivor-themed events, Board Games and Bangers nights and even a few games of cricket.
Trevor said the event started off with dads checking out The Fathering Project website and chatting about its key messages and resources.
Set up in 2013, The Fathering Project aims to positively impact fathering behaviour and fathers’ engagement with children through programs and resources that engage, equip and support fathers, families, schools, employers and community organisations.
This is because the evidence demonstrating fathers’ potential to positively influence their children’s physical and mental health, social success and academic achievements is indisputable.
Aiming to drive further connection between dads and their children, Trevor said the Dads Group competitions were very popular.
“With the paper planes, we had several rounds and then the grand final; the children really love it and if they can beat dad at something, so much the better,” he said.
“There’s a lot of value for the dads too, they get so much out of it, bond with their child, get to know other fathers and seem to really look forward to our catch-ups.”
