Crushed to death – Former Canterbury Girls’ High captain victim in Seoul tragedy

TRIBUTES are flowing for former Canterbury Girls High School Captain Grace Rached, 23, who was killed in a crowd stampede in South Korea on Saturday night.

A Halloween party flooded a narrow alley in the night-life district of Seoul, causing a deadly crush with the death toll of the tragedy at 154 and the number of injured people at 133.
In a statement issued on Monday, her family confirmed the tragic incident in a tribute to their “gorgeous angel” who “lit up a room with her infectious smile”.
“Grace always made others feel important and her kindness left an impression on everyone she ever met,” the statement read.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “My sincere condolences to the family. These people were out celebrating Halloween, out to have a good time and [expecting] to come home safely. This tragedy has impacted people in South Korea and it’s also impacted in the harshest way possible on this Australian family and others hurt in this incident and we wish them a speedy recovery.”
A Department of Education spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of a former Canterbury Girls High School student.
“Our sincere condolences and deepest sympathies go to the student’s family and the broader school community.
“The school will be providing counselling and support for all affected students and staff.”
