The 17-year-old resident was nominated by her school, Cerdon College, for excellence in academics, community service and being an outstanding advocate for saving the environment.
“I wasn’t expecting to win, I was just expecting to have a good time and cheer for my friends,” Sarah said.
Sarah, who’s striving to study neuroscience at the University of Sydney, is hopeful that her win will give her the confidence she needs to succeed upon graduating high school.
“It will just give me that encouragement to go and do the things that I want to do,” she said. Community Service Senior winner Jade Karasac has volunteered for many community initiatives, like pledging to walk 10,000 steps every September to fundraise for cerebral palsy, and doing the 65K for 65 Roses walkathon.
“I’m also really out to improve my fellow students’ wellbeing and that’s why I created the student versus teacher games,” she said.
Jade together with Sarah and Olivia Luu (Academic Senior) and Demi Spiteri (Sports Junior) helped Cerdon College Merrylands score the award for the school with the highest number of entries.
The Cumberland Young Champions Awards was initiated by local entrepreneur Brian Laul, Chairperson of Rainbow Crossing Inc. and Vice President of the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce, to acknowledge the achievements of our young people.
“It is my hope that these awards will inspire young people of all backgrounds to rise above their difficulties and pursue a journey of excellence,” he said.
