“It is such a shame as it’s such a beautiful creek and always used to be looked after but now, we never see anyone down here giving it attention like we used to,” Denis said.
“It is overgrown with weeds and the water is stagnant and smelly.
“There are broken tree logs collecting rubbish; it is so sad.
“We really worry for the animals that are still living there but there aren’t many sightings.
“It used to be home to a black snake colony but they moved on long ago.”
Saying the creek really needs some action soon to help restore its health, another resident said: “We keep hearing of all the goods things the council does and have been waiting for the creek to get some attention; we hope it is soon.”
A council spokesperson said: “The council has progressively upgraded the Little Salt Pan Creek in stages from Montgomery Reserve at the railway crossing at Revesby.
“Last year, a pollutant trap, was upgraded at Little Salt Pan Creek to reduce the amount of litter that enters the creek from stormwater and a vegetated swale was also put in Montgomery Reserve, Revesby, last year to filter stormwater. Both are maintained monthly.
“Odours are a natural occurrence in and around waterways which are influenced by environmental factors. The recent spell of warm weather, and an absence of significant rainfall, does exacerbate this.
“However, regular river health checks at Little Salt Pan Creek are conducted by the Georges Riverkeeper every three months. The last check occurred in September 2019. This showed the river supported a diverse wildlife including native fish, eels, native water hens and ducks.”
Creek’s in crisis state
LITTLE Salt Pan Creek at Revesby is in a disgraceful state say residents, who believe it is being neglected.
