Travelling across Australia, Africa, Europe, Asia, South America and North America to see who will claim the biggest prize in the show’s history – $250,000 and two luxury cars, the cousins say no amount of planning could have prepared them.
In the month leading up to the show, Chace hired a personal trainer and got experience in escape rooms.
“But after spending 30 hours on our initial flights, we were given the challenge, disembarked with our backpacks and hit the ground running,” Kathy said.
“It’s incredibly exciting yet exhausting.”
First generation Australians from Vietnamese parents, Chace speaks English, Vietnamese, French, Italian, Spanish and a little Arabic after growing up in Bankstown.
He attended St Lukes Revesby and De La Salle Bankstown, while Kathy went to Bankstown West Public and Sefton High School.
“Knowing French gave us the edge in Morocco which viewers would’ve seen last week,” he said.
Though extremely athletic, Kathy is finding some of the challenges emotionally draining, something that may not be obvious to viewers.
“I am certainly learning about my endurance abilities,” she said.
“But we are visiting places we’d never see which is awesome; we love history and culture.”
She says they entered to make their family, of which there are 40 first cousins, and communities proud.
“We’re representing the Vietnamese, Asian, refugee and LGBTQIA+ communities,” she said.
“We want to empower those who relate to us to put themselves out there and seize life’s opportunities.”
Chace says if they win, they will be packing up the family.
“We’ll take them on our own little amazing race around the world,” he said.
Catch The Amazing Race on Monday and Tuesday nights from 7.30pm on 10 and 10 Play.
