Cook up way to thrill family

COMMUNITY kitchens are closed but Cumberland residents can still perk up their meals and learn how to dish up some amazing treats for their families thanks to ‘Cafe Creations’, TAFE NSW’s first virtual introduction to cafe and cooking skills.

A chef with over 10 years’ experience who works part-time with TAFE, Glenn Austin is excited about how participants will be able to not only update their skills and bust out of lockdown blues but may also be inspired to undertake further study.
On offer on Mondays and starting on August 30, for six sessions from 10am to noon, the class is fee-exempt and available to those aged over 18.
With about 60 per cent of the ingredients readily found in the average family’s pantry or fridge, Glenn says the classes are offered on Microsoft Teams which is similar to Zoom – and TAFE can provide you with an over-the-phone tutorial to skill you up.
“There are some easy but delicious items on our menu such as scones with jam and chantilly cream, honey roasted pumpkin and oregano soup, fresh ricotta from scratch which we will turn into spinach and ricotta parcels, sweet chilli jam, homemade cinnamon scrolls and individual red velvet cakes with cream cheese frosting,” he said.
“There will be a hygiene and safety component and you will be given notice ahead of the class so you can get your ingredients together.”
Glenn said the classes were a fantastic opportunity for unleashing your inner baking goddess or god.
“Cooking and creating is just so wonderful for mental health and it is a vital life skill we should all have.”
