Cook up way for senior to help lower loneliness

WITH one in three Australians feeling lonely, Cumberland Council is hoping to reduce social isolation and loneliness among seniors by bringing seniors together for a morning of cooking and sharing a meal this Friday.

Organised by Cumberland City Council, ‘Cooking with Connection’ will be held at Allan G Ezzy Community Centre in Pemulwuy where seniors will enjoy a morning filled with fun, food and friendships.
Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake says the council strives to create a culture of connection at work, at schools, homes and in the community.
“Data shows that one in three Australians feel lonely at any given time and one in four experience persistent loneliness,” Mayor Lake said.
“Loneliness is often experienced among seniors in our community, so it’s important that the council creates opportunities for residents to build meaningful social connections and reduce isolation and loneliness.”

Loneliness Awareness Week runs from August 5 to 11, and aims to encourage seniors to connect, cook and share a meal together.
The theme this year is “Why We Feel Lonely” which explores this shared human experience and normalises conversations about loneliness and social isolation.
The week shines a spotlight on the shared experience of loneliness and calls on individuals, communities, workplaces, education and governments, to take action to reduce loneliness and create opportunities for social connections.
