Composer wins for ‘uneasy walk home’

GREENACRE resident and music composer Peggy Polias has won a coveted Art Music Award with Sydney Chamber Opera in the Performance of the Year: Notated Composition category for ‘Commute’ which she composed.

She was also a finalist in the Work of the Year: Dramatic category.
Mirroring Homer’s epic poem Odyssey through the eyes of a female Odyssea, ‘Commute’ follows the unease of a modern woman’s walk home at night.
Presented by the Australasian Performing Right associations (APRA) and the Australian Music Centre (AMC), the Art Music Awards recognise achievement in the composition, performance, education and presentation of Australian music.
“Seeing my work recognised by the music community is an honour as these awards are the equivalent of the pop music ARIAS,” she said.
“I was in very good company among the finalists and after I finish my thesis, plan to ramp up my work again composing and just rolling on, sharing the sounds I make.”
‘Breaking Glass’ (the production that ‘Commute’ was part of) was a filmed production due to the pandemic and can be watched in full at sydneychamberopera.com/2020/03/01/breaking-glass.
