The Community Support Hubs project, which was a partnership between OzHarvest, Good360, and Resilience NSW, and provided food hampers and general grocery/Covid safety equipment bags for distribution to the public, won the Community Development Category.
More than 3,700 hampers were distributed through the hubs to community members in need at Merrylands, Wentworthville and Berala, to provide food to families in isolation or those who had lost employment.
The project also engaged the community to help the council identify other issues or support mechanisms required for community members and reduce social isolation that was being experienced by many households.
“I am so pleased that our Community Development team took home the win for the council’s Covid-19 Community Support Hubs project,” Mayor Lisa Lake said.
“I thank all staff and councillors involved in this program, as some of my fellow councillors dedicated a significant amount of their time to assist with handing out hampers to those in need,” she said.
“The Awards celebrate outstanding achievements across Local Government that promote innovation and improvement within the community.”
The council was also highly commended for its project ‘Covid-19 Vaccination Programs – Staff & Community Safety’ Project.
