CUMBERLAND Council is celebrating five years since proclamation, with five events over five days in the five council wards – and everyone’s invited to the celebrations.

It has been five years since Auburn and Holroyd Councils became one – forced to amalgamate under the NSW Government’s forced council mergers.
Starting yesterday, five free community barbecues will be held at a different venue each day this week to celebrate this “important milestone”.
“We’ve come a long way in the past five years to unite two councils and part of a third council into one cohesive organisation,” Mayor Steve Christou said.
“It’s been a lot of work by hundreds of staff, but the dedication, determination and resilience has really shone through and is a credit to our community.”
Cumberland was formed when former Holroyd and Auburn Councils merged with part of the Parramatta local government area, forming an area of 72km2, with nearly 250,000 people from over 150 nationalities.
“I invite the community to come out and celebrate in their local neighbourhood, connect with friends and meet new ones,” the Mayor said.
“In the past five years, Cumberland City Council has merged processes, policies and staff to streamline services and maximise ratepayer dollars.
“The focus has been on ‘back to basics’ – ensuring that roads, rates, rubbish and essential services are impeccable and assets like libraries and community centres are well looked after.”
• Barbecues will be held at Auburn Park, Tuesday, May 18, 1-3pm; Friend Park in Wentworthville, Wednesday, May 19, 1-3pm; Auburn Forecourt, Thursday, May 20, 1-3pm; and Bathurst Street Park in Greystanes, Friday, May 21, 2.30-4.30pm.
