Coloured hens thrilling old

WITH her colourful flock of hand-reared birds accompanying her, Kris Stanley has been entertaining the elderly in nursing homes for 14 years and will host her next show at Kingsgrove Community Aid Centre in August.

A multi-talented performer, Kris has appeared in over 50 TV shows and commercials including Better Homes and Gardens, Fat Pizza, Housos, The Living Room and Bondi Vet.
However, Kris’s Feathered Friends show has now grown so popular you need to book six months in advance.
The lover of fine champagne and all things pink, Kris has 23 birds at the moment, including Big Indian Fantails, Jacobin Pigeons, Silky Chickens, Alexandrine Parrots, Indian Ringneck Parrots, a Macaw and Sun Conure Parrots.
“I’ve bred all my Fantails and some of the parrots are rescues,” she said.
“When I started out with the doves and chickens they were all white so I thought I colour my hair pink, why can’t I colour them?
“Of course it had to be harmless to them, so after much research I found I could use food dye which is non toxic, the rest is history.
“Just like magic I had coloured chickens and doves – and my audiences absolutely love it as they are all so friendly and one even laid an egg on a 103-year-old woman’s lap; she was thrilled.”
Sponsored by Southern Cross Funeral Directors owner Matthew Kwoka so there is no charge to the residents, Kris said she had to get creative during the last lockdown and invited son Chris, a ‘cos play’ enthusiast, along for a window visit.
“The residents watched an episode of Superman and then peered out the window to see him dressed as the superhero,” she said.
“The residents loved it; they were all swooning and blowing him kisses and we have Captain America on the way next.”
