Club donates funds to develop asbestos cure

IN efforts to alleviate the suffering of club members and as in previous years, Revesby Workers’ Club has committed $45,000 to the Asbestos Dust and Diseases Research Institute (ADDRI) in Concord.

Australia had one of the world’s highest incidence of malignant mesothelioma per capita in 2018, with more than 700 new cases diagnosed each year due to the wide use of the known carcinogen – asbestos.
However, it was three years earlier when the fight against this scourge really hit home at Revesby Workers’ Club after its very popular president and ClubsNSW chairman Pat Rogan contracted the disease and later died in February 2015 from the consequences of working in an asbestos environment.
Offering its support for the last five years, the club remains committed to supporting the ADDRI in achieving its ultimate goal of saving lives through laboratory research, clinical sciences, prevention and public health.
The ADDRI have developed a framework for earlier detection, an improved understanding of mesothelioma and ground breaking treatments to extend lives.
Club President Daryl Melham AM said it was hoped this research would help find a cure.
“If successful, it will help many in the community that are affected by this wretched disease,” he said.
“It also has implications around the world, where asbestos is still being utilised with no regard, particularly in third world countries.”
