Clear 300kg of river rubbish in a day

VOLUNTEERS have cleared almost 300 kilograms of rubbish from the Georges River in one day.

More than 80 volunteers joined in ‘Paddle against Plastic’ on Saturday, April 17, organised by Georges Riverkeeper in collaboration with City of Canterbury Bankstown and the River Canoe Club.
Georges Riverkeeper Chairman Adrian Wong thanked everyone who gave up their time and came out in kayaks and on foot to rid the river of rubbish, while Program Manager Beth Salt said community clean-ups like Paddle Against Plastic were great to educate people about the plastic problem and one of the best ways to get rid of it once it was already in our environment.
Ms Salt said plastics don’t ever break down, they just break up into smaller and smaller pieces that degrade river health and kill wildlife.
“Disposing of litter the right way and swapping single use plastics for reusables will help to fight the problem,” she said.
Georges Riverkeeper coordinates projects on behalf of the eight local councils along the length of the Georges River, focusing on water quality monitoring and research, rubbish collection and bush regeneration, stormwater advocacy and community education.
