Chips down as bag limits still on spuds

IT’S not quite a potato famine yet but we are experiencing an Australia-wide shortage caused by heavy rain and the resulting floods which have wiped out young crops and in many places, the soil is still too wet to allow for replanting.
The shortage has led some cafes and restaurants to temporarily substitute the deep-fried favourite with sweet potato, their own hand-cut potatoes or to take hot chips off the menu altogether, while one major supermarket has introduced limits on the number of bags customers can buy.

You can still get hot potato fries at The Mill Hotel, however, but potato wedges are now off the menu.
“We’re struggling to get potatoes at the moment and hope the situation improves soon,” a spokesperson said.
Revesby’s Saltwater Seafood takeaway has had to put the price of a small serve of hot chips from $4.50 up to $5 to help them offset some of the price rises.
While Georges Hall Seafood takeaway is resisting putting up their charges.
“We haven’t had any trouble with supply but they are certainly costing more,” a spokesperson said.
This follows Coles confirming a buying limit on frozen potato products has been introduced to combat shortages.
“Due to supply issues of frozen potato chips, we have introduced a temporary purchase limit of two items per transaction but fresh spuds are not affected.”
Woolworths is also suffering potato product pricing and availability issues.
“We’re pleased to say, though, we don’t have any product limits on frozen chips or packet chips,” a spokesperson said.
McDonalds is still serving up the full menu to customers.
“McDonald’s has been proudly supporting Aussie farmers for more than 50 years and we have an extensive supply chain,” a spokesperson said.
