Cherry Blossom Festival’s cancelled for second year

THE Cherry Blossoms will still bloom but the festival that draws thousands of visitors to enjoy the striking pink flowers at Auburn Botanic Gardens, has been cancelled for the second successive year with the Covid-19 threat still lingering.

The nine-day festival is Cumberland’s signature event of the year – attracting more than 90,000 visitors “to taste, explore and discover while the cherry blossoms are in full bloom” – was to return from August 21.
A Cumberland Council spokesperson said council staff worked hard to plan a fantastic event with amazing food and entertainment and everyone was disappointed that due to the public health risk posed by Covid-19, the festival would not proceed.
“The decision to cancel was not made lightly,” he said.
“The health and safety of visitors to our events and parks are of the utmost priority.
“We understand this decision will be disappointing for our community – as it is for us. But you can’t keep a good festival down and we look forward to blooming again next year.”
Anyone who purchased a ticket will receive a refund.
