Tonnes of household chemicals – including left-over paint, pesticides, gas bottles, pool chemicals, smoke detectors, car batteries, fluorescent light globes and tubes, and oils – are expected to be dropped off at the biannual Chemical Clean-Out in the Campsie Customer Service car park in Shakespeare Street, Campsie, 9am-3.30pm.
The hugely successful program saw more than 560 residents dispose of 21,863 kilograms of waste in one day in April last year.
Important tips for transporting your household chemicals to the drop off location:
• Don’t mix chemicals, as this may produce dangerous reactions;
• Wherever possible, keep all chemicals in their original containers;
• Ensure containers are clearly labelled, however if you don’t know the contents, label the container ‘unknown chemical’;
• Wrap containers holding liquids securely in newspaper, place in sturdy bags and then in a plastic bucket or tray; and
• Transport chemicals in the boot of your car, away from passengers.
