Charity launches winter appeal for blankets, clothing and cash

DONATIONS to the annual Padstow Community Care (PCC) Winter Appeal, used to be spent on buying heaters but times have become so tough that families would rather huddle under blankets than run the risk of being stuck with huge power bills.

PCC Manager Grant Heslop says the challenges to support those doing it tough have never been so great with many households facing an extremely difficult winter.
“With rising costs of living, unexpected job losses, family breakdowns and significant health issues, many people are struggling just to stay afloat,” he said.
“But every winter, we help hundreds of families and individuals with everyday essential needs. We are there when people need help the most.”
With the council putting in $1,000 and kicking off the winter appeal donations, Grant is inviting the community to make a cash donation or drop off warm clothing, blankets or doonas during their opening hours.
“Your generosity will be the source of warmth for many families and individuals that are struggling to survive this winter,” he said.
One such individual who is grateful for PCC’s support, Shona was introduced to them three years ago when she was struggling to make ends meet and dealing with depression.
“PCC helped me with my bills and food needs and gave me the support I needed,” she said.
“I now volunteer for them a couple of days a week and I really enjoy the friendly atmosphere as I had experienced discrimination before being half Turkish, half Egyptian but everyone here is treated the same.
“I don’t really shop anywhere else since the Renew store here is such a great shop with only quality, discounted items.
“I don’t know where else you can buy a nice jumper for $7 but you can at PCC.”
