A CHANGING of the guard like no other, departing Canterbury City Community Centre (4cs) CEO Liz Messih is staying on until the end of the month to ensure a smooth transition for her replacement Esta Paschalidis-Chilas.

A former Canterbury Councillor and co-founder of Settlement Services International (SSI), Esta – who started last month – said she was very lucky to have Liz still on board.
“I was no stranger to the impressive work of Liz and 4cs and that was a key reason why I applied for the role,” she said.
“Liz has created a strong, community-embedded organisation and I want to stay true to that legacy.
“During Covid, 4cs was extraordinary in its response to keep the community safe and supported.”
With Mayor Khal Asfour announcing there will be a civic reception in the coming weeks to thank her for being at the helm for 22 years, Liz said she was very proud of her achievements.
Those include establishing 4Cs STARS (Skills Training And Resource Service), Garden Care program, the Lakemba Community Garden, the original Canterbury Men’s Shed, Lakemba Ladies Lounge and many short courses, social inclusion groups, events, activities and campaigns like ‘I Love Lakemba’ as well as their Covid response.
“4cs does not have layers of bureaucracy so we were able to pivot, adapt and provide many solutions to improve lives and I am very proud of our successes,” Liz said.
Esta said: “4cs is a community asset that we can keep building on, making sure it is robust and healthy; I’m really looking forward to that and being part of this great community that I feel very strongly about.”
