Chance to step back in time

HISTORY lovers are in for an overdue treat when Guildford’s Linnwood House opens its doors for an Open Day in July.

Built in 1891 by George McCredie, a prominent businessman, the house is of state significance as a welfare site for over 80 years before being listed on the State Heritage Register in 2003.
Linnwood is also significant as an example of a wealthy city family’s country retreat built on a large estate beyond the then outskirts of Sydney.
The size and detail of this late Victorian residence demonstrates the aspirations and lifestyles of this class in society and is sure to bring back memories of days gone by.
Though opening briefly in March, Linnwood has been closed for two years over the pandemic.
“We are all looking forward to the July Open Day as it’s such a long time and hopefully we’ll get a good crowd,” Friends of Linnwood President Dorothy Warwick said.
With entertainment by the Parramatta City Band on offer, a sausage sizzle and refreshments, visitors will enjoy the showcase of memorabilia including an interesting mix of vintage cares comprising FX and FJ Holdens, Italian made cars and American Independents, think Studebaker-Packard, Hudson and Willys Overland vehicles.
There will also be stalls inside the house including the ‘We’ll Meet Again’ display of WWII domestic relics as well as from the Australian Lace Guild and Traditional Tools Group plus handbags, jewellery, scarves, gems and glass creations.
With $5 admission, Linnwood will open on Sunday, July 10, 11am-4pm.
