Champs form new cricket club

THEY’RE the new kids on the block but already they’re proving a success.

Formed by a group of mates – who previously won the A-Grade title with Panania RSL and wanted to form their own club – Brighton Lakes Cricket Club scored an impressive victory against Casula in its first match in the aligned Bankstown/Liverpool 1st Grade cricket competition .
The group of players are no cricketing slouches either, with the squad including a host of former NSW Premier, Martin Shield and A-Grade cricketing talent.
Cricket Club President Bryden Sharp said the group had long spoken of forming their own club, and were thrilled to partner with a local business, looking to support local sport.
“We approached Brighton Lakes Golf and Recreation Club with the idea, and they jumped at it,” Sharp said.
“It’s a great relationship and we could not operate without their support.
“As a group of mates, we were often spending our nights at the club socially, and we felt why not take it a step further, and represent them.
“We have played for a number of years in the local cricket competition and we have often spoken of starting our own club, and Brighton Lakes CC is what has come from that idea.”
The club has taken on a unique emblem, with the ‘Cassowary” adoring the playing kit and logo of the club.
It marks a different look and a new, fresh approach to running a cricket club in the local competition.
While the club boasts just the single side this season, they have not ruled out expanding to further teams, both junior and senior, in the coming years.
Brighton Lakes CC has not only enjoyed the support of the Brighton Lakes Golf and Recreation Club, but also Banksia Super Cellars and Kingsgrove Sports Centre have chipped in to make the dream a reality.
