Centre enriching worlds

WHETHER you are a silver surfer, new arrival, Indigenous resident in search of a good yarn, smart toddler, parent, movie buff or an armchair travel devotee among others, the Guildford Community Centre can enrich your world.

Guilford hub the area’s backbone

Staffed five days a week, 9am–4pm, recently undergoing a refurbishment and close to the train and bus, the centre is also available for hire to community groups for meetings and community programs and to residents for special occasions such as birthday parties and weddings.
Targeted for young people, seniors, migrants, children, families and people with disability, some of the programs include form filling and information, referral assistance, a youth drop in and employment program, including getting help preparing CVs, Super Smart Toddler classes aiming to help children develop early literacy skills, free English classes, computer tips, a weekly Afghan parenting/mothers group and support and social connection for older people and people with a disability living in the Cumberland area.
Some of the wellness activities on offer include indoor sports, games, singing, craft, tai chi, zumba gold, chair aerobics, walk and talk and armchair travel, with all also featuring free morning tea, hot lunch and dessert.
“We also have weekly Spanish and Maltese groups, and Community Inclusion Days where we celebrate different events throughout the year,” a spokesperson said.
“These programs are open to nursing homes and retirement villages in the Cumberland area.
“The centre also has a commercial kitchen which is utilised weekdays by the council’s Nutrition Services Team’s onsite cook who prepares hot, nutritious and delicious meals for seniors and people with disability.
“There is definitely something for everyone at our wonderful community hub in Guildford and we welcome all.
“The council is also looking to extend operating hours to increase community use and access to the centre in the evening and on weekends.”
