Celebrating the Year of the Rabbit which is said to be the luckiest where all things are possible, festivities are ready to go off with a colourful bang from 12.30pm as ‘Lions’ deliver shop blessings, red envelopes and fortune cookies ahead of their spectacular show complete with drummers and the Man of Wealth.
With Canterbury Bankstown home to many families of Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese backgrounds, hundreds are expected to take the opportunity to breathe some fire into the Lunar New Year and wear red to boost luck.
Considered the colour of good fortune, new red outfits are worn to visit relatives and friends, to exchange blessings and gifts, and as a way to welcome in the year.
During these visits, children will get red paper envelopes filled with cash notes, symbolising that bad luck is driven away and good fortune is passed on.
Campsie Centre Manager Crombie Pitts says the celebrations will be awash with colour and the sights, sounds and taste of Asia.
“It’s going to be such a joyous celebration and we hope everyone comes down to join in all the fun and make the most of welcoming the Lunar New Year,” he said.
