Bucking the national trend which found one in three students not meeting basic standards in literacy and numeracy, Auburn North Year 3 and Year 5 students – 98 per cent of whom are from non-English speaking backgrounds – have significantly outperformed their peers in all five literacy and numeracy areas.
Principal Mark Harris said the great outcome reflected the results the students were achieving every day.
He said students, staff and parents felt a strong sense of belonging and knew they were valued members of the school family.
“We have nurtured an orderly learning environment across our K-6 school,” he said.
“Our students, staff and parents are highly aspirational and we all believe our students can achieve anything and everything.
“I’ve taught in high schools and primary schools in five countries and been the principal of three schools but I’ve loved every day of my 24 years at Auburn North.”
He said factors contributing to their NAPLAN success, included high quality leadership and teaching programs undertaken by staff, daily literacy (phonics and reading) and numeracy lessons, specialist learning support, small group learning, weekly technology classes and parent workshops and programs to enable them to be active participants in their child’s learning.
A student said: “Auburn North Public School is my second home because I feel respected, accepted and valued like in my own home; I’m really grateful to be a student at Auburn North as no other school can compete.”
