Canterbury Little Athletes open door

AFTER enjoying an exciting season of success last summer, in which 21 athletes won two gold, two silver and five bronze medals at Little Athletics State Championships, Canterbury Little Athletics Club (CLAC) is gearing up to do it all again when the next season gets underway in September.

With 442 athletes registered last season, an increase of over 100, the club chalked up plenty of other success too, including 7,934 personal bests, 23 club records broken, 109 athletes competed at the Inner-City Zone Championships and 67 athletes competed at the Region 8 Championships.
Run entirely by volunteers, with an emphasis on family, fun and fitness, CLAC encourages athletes to improve their own times, jumps or throws each week and celebrate each athlete’s personal bests.
Outgoing CLAC president Amy Winters said developing the potential in every child at a young age would inspire them to have a passion for sports.
“Little Athletics is a good foundation into other sports because it teaches the basic sports skills,” she said.
“We have asked the council for ground improvements over recent years but unfortunately, because those upgrades haven’t occurred, a reduced number of athletes can be on Campbell Field on competition nights, so we have to have a cap on numbers,” Winters said.
CLAC vice president Ljiljana Senta said she was excited for this year’s season.
“We run competition nights each Friday from 6pm, between September and March ,” she said.
“Training is also provided on Mondays and Wednesdays, a wonderful opportunity for athletes to hone their skills at no extra cost.“
CLAC also now boasts a seniors club for athletes aged 10 and above.
“We had many parents register last season and not only has it been lots of fun, but there has been lots of success,” Senta said.
