Camera to help safety

MILPERRA residents have welcomed plans for a new red light camera on Henry Lawson Drive but are disappointed with its location.

Fearing a pedestrian fatality along Henry Lawson Drive at Milperra, residents called for a footbridge to be built across the busy road or a red light camera but say the camera should be installed at the Pozieres Avenue intersection and not the M5.
Hundreds of residents signed a petition calling for safety measures before someone was killed.
Tara McCarthy, Deputy Secretary Safety, Environment and Regulation at Transport for NSW, said the new camera would target red-light running and speeding from December 20 to improve safety for all road users.
“We know that running red lights can lead to serious T-bone crashes, pedestrian casualties and devastating impacts for all involved,” Ms McCarthy said.
“About 30 per cent of red-light speed camera offences are from people running red lights so we are addressing this problem head-on.
“The new camera will help improve road safety at this busy intersection where there are community facilities and homes, as well as traffic from buses, light commercial vehicles, cars and pedestrians.”
She said that in the five years from 2016 to 2020, 19 crashes occurred at this intersection and 19 people were injured, six seriously.
“Road crashes claimed the lives of 284 people on NSW roads last year with speed the biggest killer and these red light speed cameras will help to reduce risk in Milperra,” Ms McCarthy said.
Milperra resident John Grinsell said they’re still hopeful that a red light camera would be installed at the intersection of Henry Lawson Drive and Pozieres Ave “before a fatality occurs”.
