Bulldogs, ’80s stars at family fundraiser

MEET the Bulldogs and help raise awareness of ovarian cancer and funds to fight the deadly disease.

This year’s Bulldogs team, along with ‘players from the 80s’, will be heading to the Twin Willows Hotel, on Saturday, April 8, for “a day of fun”, including live music, barbecue, lots of food and refreshments, face painting, football passing competition, Bulldogs jersey giveaway and much more, to raise funds for the fight against ovarian cancer.
Every day in Australia, three women’s lives are lost to the disease and another five are diagnosed.
Head of the Laundy Hotels group, Arthur Laundy said the cause was close to his heart, as it would be for many.
His “good friend” and long time employee Robyn Gumbley was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and after a long battle passed away about two years ago at the age of 73.
“She got this terrible thing, ovarian cancer – it’s shocking,” he said.
Trying desperately to beat the cancer, she underwent a couple of major operations and also travelled overseas for Proton therapy treatment that “wasn’t available here”.
“They have a machine that can shoot a beam to within one 30th of a millimetre and to the exact depth to treat the cancer. It’s amazing,” he said.
“We were trying desperately to beat it.”
Although similar technology will soon be available in Australia, Mr Laundy said fundraisers like this one would go a long way to help fund research and technology.
“We need to do what we can to beat this thing,” he said.
Former Bulldogs great, Geoff Robinson, who has his own battles with cancer, has organised players from the ‘80s like Gary and Graeme Hughes and John Coveney to take part in the day, which starts at 1pm. Catch up with the players between 2-4pm.
“It’ll be a good, fun day, for a very worthy cause,” Mr Laundy said.
