John, 26, said he was relatively untouched by cancer until in the space of a few months, five relatives and friends were diagnosed with the killer.
“My mother went through thyroid cancer, my uncle was battling leukaemia, a friend lost a leg to cancer, another friend lost an eye and a family friend was lost to lung cancer,” he said.
“I couldn’t believe it and was desperate to help them in anyway I could and then I saw this fundraiser for the Cancer Council come up and just had to do it.”
He will be driving with his sister, Mary, and two friends that have been fighting cancer.
“It is for such a good cause and we plan to have fun on the way,” he said.
“I feel like I am dealing with it on all sides since my car has a form of ‘auto’ cancer called rust; it’s been treated but I’ve been told it will come back so this could very well be a farewell tour for my car too.”
The drive – featuring dozens of cars detailed for the occasion – heads off from Sydney Olympic Park for a relaxed spin to morning tea, then to a final lunch stop and social gathering at Wollongong, all in the name of cancer research.
Box Rallies, which has raised more than $24 million to cancer research in the last 11 years, is the driving force behind the fundraiser.
