Brush up on boomerang art win

OVER 200 people aged from three to 88 years, have been given a crash course in ancient painting techniques at Uncle John Dickson’s boomerang decorating workshop at Yagoona Community Centre (pictured) on the last day of NAIDOC Week earlier this month.

Organiser Bankstown Women’s Health Centre (BWHC) provided children with wiggles, gum boots and beanies and mums with crucial information on women’s health, emphasising the importance of screenings and no-cost health services.
BWHC Operations Manager Kerrie Newcombe said the children had a blast with a jumping castle and everyone took part in a moving blessing smoking ceremony.
“It was inspiring to see children learning about Aboriginal culture, including the significance of traditional art, with our eldest artist at 88 years old, sharing her wisdom and skills,” she said.
“Special appreciation goes to Aunty Liz and Uncle John for their diligent organisation and to everyone who contributed to making this day a memorable celebration of culture and community spirit including Wiley Park Girls High Principal Rene Demos, multicultural community liaison officer Ghandi Saydan, Councillor Rachelle Harika and State MP for Bankstown, Jihad Dib, and wife Erin, whose support helped create such a meaningful day.”
