Bankstown North teacher Denise Armson said there were some Very Hungry Caterpillars, Matildas, Harry Potters and wizardry friends and even kindergarten’s Alpacas in Maracas.
“The class made plenty of Mexican hats and cardboard alpacas so even those who didn’t have costumes, could dress up and have fun,” she said.
“Each class also read a story from the Book Week list; for most of our students, English is a second language so literacy is our top priority and a big part of our curriculum.”
St Mel’s Principal Elena Mullen said students enjoyed a fun performance at the library and brought in their favourite books from home to read in class.
“They were also asked to design a bookmark, reflecting the Book Week theme of ‘Dreaming with eyes open’ and dress up as their favourite book characters,” she said.
“Harry Potter was a popular character choice, with hairy character Hagrid Hedwig also flying in to make a special appearance.
“The day was a huge success, enjoyed by students, staff and parents, highlighting the immense joy that comes with reading.”
