He was among 44 firefighters recognised by Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) as it marked St Florian’s Day – the International Day of Firefighters (May 4).
Senior Firefighter, Adam Long, was attending a house fire in Evaline Street, Campsie on March 30 last year when, through a window, he found a person trapped inside.
He used rescue shears to cut through and remove a security grill, before removing the person through the open window whilst being exposed to acrid smoke and extreme heat.
On arrival, firefighters were advised that up to four persons were inside the residence which was fortified with steel bars on all external windows. Flames were coming through the roof, the property was heavily smoke logged and there was a large amount of debris from the collapsed ceiling and partially collapsed roof.
Two residents were safely removed from the home, but a third person did not survive.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews from Campsie, Burwood, Ashfield and Marrickville, who also responded to the fire, received a Unit Commendation for Meritorious Service.
FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter praised all firefighters across the state, acknowledging the challenges faced by firefighters over the last few years.
Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke said the firefighters who were honoured have all put the community ahead of themselves.
“The common thread amongst all firefighters being recognised is their selflessness and community-mindedness, and on behalf of communities across NSW, I say thank you,” Ms Cooke said.
