Keen to support the community and as part of Mental Health Month in October, the 2024 Student Leadership Team at East Hills Boys High School, is taking part in the One Foot Forward initiative organised by the Black Dog Institute.
Headed up by the school’s Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) teacher Falahola Manu, the newly voted in Student Leadership Team – following the graduation of the 2023 Year 12 contingent who are now sitting for their HSC exams – decided One Foot Forward would be their first community undertaking.
School Prefect Muhammad Nihal Khan said he’d been exposed to the challenges that come with mental health which was why he was completing the One Foot Forward Challenge.
“It has been extremely fun to complete with friends, Ms Manu and Ms Shakir as we are working together to show support for such a great cause,” he said.
With many having first hand experiences of friends and family suffering mental health issues, Ms Manu said getting behind the Black Dog Institute was a worthwhile cause with funds raised going to support people who needed it most.
“We will each be walking 150km throughout October with the goal of raising $500,” she said.
“Most of the students have already walked 15-20km individually and we will be completing a group walk on October 31.”
As such, the school is seeking sponsorship and inviting members of the public to support One Foot Forward by making a donation no matter how small.
