Boy smashes double record set by Thorpe

DESTINED for a big career in the water, Milperra Public School Year 6 student Thomas Valassis has broken three records, two of which were held by Ian Thorpe who was a former student at the school.

Achieved last Friday at the East Hills PSSA District Swimming Carnival, the Thorpe records broken were for the 50 metre freestyle and the 200 metre Individual Medley events.
In the 200 metre event, Thomas swam it in 2:44.03 breaking Thorpe’s 2:45.47 (1994); in the 50m freestyle, Thomas swam it in 31.07 breaking Thorpe’s 31.26 (1994); and in the 50m butterfly, Thomas swam it in 33.60 breaking L Cole’s 34.31 (2002).
Milperra Public Principal Sarah Casuccio said the records were held by Thorpe for almost 30 years.
“What a day it was for Milperra Public,” she said.
“Absolutely smashing the district carnival with outstanding results from our competitors.
“Thomas said he’d always wanted to break that record (50m freestyle); he trained very hard five days a week to achieve this dream and is so excited that it happened.
“I am so proud of Thomas’ outstanding swimming ability and his dedication and commitment to achieving this goal.
“Well done, everyone! A special congratulations to Thomas.
“We are so proud of all of you.”
