Boy scores Men’s Major

JACK McShane, 16, has become the youngest winner of the prestigious “Ray Gillard” Men’s Major Singles title in Club Merrylands Bowling history – the first junior to win the title.
In an open aged event, Jack showed skill and composure well above his age.

Going into the final as an outside chance against Open State Squad member Darren Morrison, no one would have been surprised if the exciting occasion had got the better of him.
But Jack played a near perfect game, nailing the jack with one of his first two bowls every end and then when required, playing precision weight to get the shots with his last two bowls.
He next had the opportunity to play in the Zone Champion of Champion Singles, where each Club enters its Major Singles winner and again, came away with the win 31-10.
Jack’s win came as no surprise to his follow teammates, as they have been monitoring his progress since joining the Club in 2019 and was apart of the Grade 2 team that won the Zone Pennant that year.
In 2021, Jack teamed up with veteran Shawn Thompson to win the Zone Pairs title and the again with Shawn, alongside Michael Clarke and Peter Harry to win the Zone Fours title.
His impressive form led to his debut in the Merrylands Grade 1 side where he slotted straight in and performed like he had been playing at that level his whole life.
Jack started bowling aged nine at Denistone Bowling Club where his father is a member and still plays.
Jack won the Denistone Minor Singles aged 11 and the Zone 10 Rookie Singles. The following year Jack won the Major Singles at Denistone and made two State Under 18 finals.
