Bottle up way to support charity

EVERY little bit adds up and with that in mind, Mayor Bilal El-Hayek and Councillor Rachelle Harika have donated 20 recycling bins on behalf of Canterbury Bankstown Council, costing $1,060, for charity Little Wings to distribute to schools and organisations to support their funding needs.

With the funding made possible through the Community Grants and Event Sponsorship Program Budget, the bins have been distributed to Yagoona Pubic School, Donington Gardens, Padstow North Public School, Bankstown City Lions Football Club, Chester Hill Public School, Bankstown Senior College, Georges River Grammar and Kingsgrove Public School among others.
One of the first to take up the recycling bin offer for Little Wings a year ago, Punchbowl Public School Principal Donna McGeary said she would encourage other schools to join the initiative.
“It’s very easy to be involved and it’s for such a great cause,” she said.
“Little Wings drops off the bins and when they’re full, you just call Bankstown Return And Earn and they come and collect it.”
“It’s one of a range of environmental initiatives that our Punchbowl Green Team, comprising students, is always keen promote.”
A Green Team spokesperson said that over the last year, they recycled enough bottles to help fuel planes for five flights.
“We learnt from Little Wings that 20 bottles equals about 1 litre of fuel,” they said.
“We have four bins at our school and we, the Green Team, remind all that only recycling goes into these bins and not general rubbish.
“Let’s really help all of the children who need to be transported and recycle all of our cans and bottles.”
