Cumberland Police responded to reports of a “suspicious object” found by workers at the Morris Street worksite at 4.40pm and evacuated occupants from nearby homes as a precaution.
Initially examined by specialist officers from the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) Joint Explosive Ordnance Support – NSW (JEOS-NSW) was then bought in to identify the potentially lethal object.
A Defence spokesperson said it was assessed and identified on site before being deemed safe to remove for later disposal.
“If a member of the public finds a suspicious item, such as unexploded ordnance, or has any already in their possession, they should not touch or disturb it,” she said.
“The local police should be contacted, and they will arrange for military experts to attend and dispose of the item, as required.
“Defence routinely assists state policing agencies in the safe recovery or disposal of suspected unexploded military ordnance found in the public domain.”
