Goals to Blacktown City’s Lachlan Campbell and Travis Major were enough to cancel out a goal from Olympic’s Jason Madonis after an action-packed second half of football, giving them a 2-1 win.
The first half of the match saw plenty of chances at both ends of the field, with Blacktown City goalkeeper Tristan Prendergast being called into action several times in the opening quarter.
The first goal of the match came in the 58th minute, after Blacktown’s inspirational captain Matthew Lewis sent a well-placed corner kick into the box and Campbell was clinical in his finish, heading the ball on target through the hands of Olympic keeper Christopher Parsons.
A second goal came in the 70th minute, this time for the home side.
Oliver Puflett played a ball back to Madonis, who fired a cracking strike from well outside the 18-yard box out of reach of Prendergast and into the netting to equalise.
Less than 10 minute later, the visitors earned a penalty after Nicola Kuleski pushed down Major in front of the goalmouth.
Major stepped up to the spot and calmly converted to take back the lead for Blacktown.
Olympic coach Ante Juric put emphasis on his team’s fighting spirit in his reflection of the clash.
“We played the team that’s on top and that’s always going to be a tough battle,” he said.
“What was disappointing was we gave away the two goals which makes it tougher to get a result.
“Our team spirit is very good in terms of our boys don’t give up and we keep going until the very end.”
