Operating a ‘call and collect’ service at the store on Parramatta Road, manager Mary Basseri says customers choose a bike online, call to place the order and check availability and then drop in to pick it up.
“I don’t think we have ever seen it so busy except for maybe last year’s lockdown,” she said.
Lidcombe Area Cycling Club (LACC) president Nigel Apps says the growth in bike sales makes perfect sense since cycling is the ultimate escape for all ages and families during lockdown.
“You can only ride in pairs, except for family groups as there are no cycling club activities at the moment but there is no better feeling of freedom than to be up, up and away on your bike,” he said.
Though roads are much quieter, making it easier to share the road, there is more delivery truck activity and Nigel has opted to train at Sydney Olympic Park.
“I also went to Parramatta Park recently but I was shocked at how many people were there so I did one lap and then left,” he said.
“Being a Sunday, it was to be expected but it’s a good idea to avoid crowds.
“We’re not sure when our club activities will resume at this stage and even then, safety will be our top priority.”
Bike sales up as more riding out covid
SOME businesses are doing it tough in the lockdown but not Lidcombe’s 99 Bikes shop with sales jumping by 25 per cent in the last month.
