Work is underway on the State Government’s Parramatta Road Urban Amenity Improvement Program (PRUAIP), which Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou says includes $27 million for new footpaths, pedestrian crossings, cycleways, trees, public art and improved street lighting.
Redundant power poles will also be removed and aerial power and telecommunication cables relocated underground wherever possible, and Cr Christou said the investment would revitalise the corridor and “draw people back into the area”.
“Cumberland City Council’s ‘back to basics’ approach is being applied to one of Sydney’s busiest roads,” he said.
“We are investing in the future of our city with a more accessible, safer and beautified environment in our part of the gateway.
“It will be a great place to live, shop and do business and I’m excited to see the program bring State agencies and local councils together to collaborate on projects that will improve public amenity in the corridor.”
As part of PRUAIP, four amenity improvement projects were identified within Cumberland including public domain improvements on Parramatta Road; works to extend Auburn Park; improvements to the Stubbs Street Streetscape; and a pedestrian cycleway overpass on Melton Street with improved access at Deakin and Adderley streets.
There will also be the opportunity to enhance the urban environment through streetscapes and public art and the council has engaged Currie and Brown as the project managers for these works.
