The premier awards are presented to individuals and organisations in Australia that achieve the highest standards of aquatic education excellence.
The awards were officially presented by Austswim Ambassador Brooke Hanson OAM and Austswim Chief Executive Officer Brad Low during a recent ‘Rise With Us’ breakfast event held across Australia for Austswim licensed teachers.
Coaching out of Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre at Auburn, Michael said he undertook the swimming teaching course during Covid and got accreditation as a coach for adults as well as in basic skills in water safety.
He said it was an eye-opener when he first started coaching as most of the students were migrants who had no experience in the water.
“They didn’t know the first thing, not how to breathe let alone save another’s life and I’ve been able to really help them develop and acquire these skills,” he said.
“It’s been so inspiring and I think what may give my students the edge is that we set training goals and when they reach a certain level, they are just so happy.
“I really enjoy what I do; you don’t do what you do to win awards but it’s nice to receive the recognition for teaching this essential life skill.”
Best New Teacher win in Austswim nationally
