Berala Physie girl named ‘national champ’

KEEPING classes going through covid via zoom, Berala United Physical Culture Club returned triumphantly to full classes and national competitions in 2022, with 12 Zone finalists, five Zone placegetters and even one member named the 10-year-old National Champion.

Also known as ‘physie’, Physical Culture is a uniquely Australian sport which teaches a fusion of dancing, aerobics, gymnastics and ballet, and teacher Rebecca White said the first place win was an amazing accomplishment for student Madison.
“At the Junior National Finals – attended by all States who participate in BJP Physie, we had eight teams to represent our club, one team for every age group,” she said.
“We were delighted to receive three places – third for our 7/8yrs, fourth for our 5/6yrs, and fifth for our 9/10yrs. Most of our 5-8 year group were competing in their very first team, and had a lot of fun.
“Our Senior team, with members ranging from 17 to 36 years, came fourth – our first Senior place for as long as we can remember!”
This will be the first year a 70 years and Over section is being introduced at a national competition level.
“There are not too many sports out there where you can start as a toddler, and continue well into your 70s and 80s,” Rebecca said.
“It’s a sport that can be shared between mothers, daughters and grandmothers.”
With many families now looking to return to extra-curricular activities, with Active Kids and Creative Kids Vouchers welcome, all are encouraged to come along for two free trial classes when the club gets underway again on Monday and Friday, February 13 and 17.
