Battle huge factory fire

MORE than 70 firefighters have battled a fire at a factory (pictured) in Canterbury which threatened to spread to an adjoining petrol station, where more than 100,000 litres of petrol were being stored, as well as two neighbouring homes and an equipment hire warehouse.

Fire broke out in the whitegoods business on Canterbury Road yesterday about 2.30am and took firefighters more than three hours of intense attack to bring it under control. Firies remained on scene for several hours dousing materials which continued to smoulder in deep-seated areas of the fire and assess the asbestos risk.
Fire crews attempted to enter the building but were quickly forced to retreat due to the dangerous conditions.
Experts from the Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) will examine where and how the fire started.
